Accommodation Information
General Person
to speak to: Shelagh
If you are under 18 and want to
go into rented accommodation, you will need a letter from your
parents. Students under 18 should be in Private Home
Accommodation for at least 3 months.
Information for
those wanting rented accommodation:
- Rented accommodation is not always
cheaper than PHA
- You must pay for bills (electricity,
gas TV)
- There may be no native speakers of
English in your house so your English might not improve
quickly
Most accommodation is let from 1st July
until 30th June each year. Houses and flats are having
contracts signed now for 2005/2006:
- Availability of houses/flats can be
found on the university web site or at student letting
agents. There are plenty of these letting agents in the area
around Victoria Road.
The university accommodation
address is www.unipol.leeds.ac.uk
- Look through the properties
available. Make a list of properties you are interested in.
Remember to check how near they are to where you will be
studying next year. I am available to help and advise you
with this. Information for those already in rented
accommodation
- If you want to stay in your
accommodation next year you must contact the letting agent
and sign another contract for2005/2006
- If you don't do this, somebody else
will sign for your property and you will have to move out on
June30th
- If you want to change to another
property then you need to be looking now
Information for those in Private Home
Accommodation (PHA) If you are in PHA at present but want
your own accommodation, follow the instructions above.
Renting a
Flat Important
information when renting a flat. Person to Speak to: Shelagh
- A returnable deposit of 1 month's
rent must be paid in advance
- When renting accommodation a legal
contract will have to be signed. This means that you must
stay for a minimum of 6 months, usually one year. If you
decide to leave the flat you will not get your money back
- As well as the rent you will be
responsible for the utility bills e.g. gas, electricity,
water. These bills will be divided equally between all the
people sharing the flat
- The house/flat will be furnished but
will not have any kitchen equipment, bedding etc. You will
have to buy these
- If you buy a television, you have to
buy a license. If you don't you could be fined. This could
be up to £1000
- You can get a form to apply for a
television license from a Post Office.
You do not need to
pay Council Tax because you are students. You might need the
school to give you a letter to send to the council
Ask Shelagh, Bob or Helen about
this.
What to Do When You Leave Rented
Accommodation Person to speak to: Shelagh Before you can
claim back your deposit, there are several things you must do.
The letting agent will want proof that you have done these
things:
- Before you move out, you must read
the electricity meter and gas meter and write down the
numbers
- You must leave the property tidy or
they will charge you for cleaning
- You need proof from the council that
you do not owe any council tax. I can help you with this
- You must tell the gas and electricity
companies that you are leaving and tell them the final
reading from the meter. The letting agent will want to see
proof that these bills have been paid before they will
return your deposit
Working in the
UK Person to
speak to: Shelagh Shelagh will give you advice on how
to find part time work in the UK. As our full time courses are
intensive, we suggest that you work only a few hours per week
while you are studying. Most students give up work before they
take their exams.
Can I work whilst I am studying
in the UK? Most students on courses of more than 6
months will be given a passport stamp or visa sticker that
allows them to work part-time during the term (up to 20 hours
a week) and full-time during the vacations. However, for
immigration, you must be able to show that you can afford to
study and live in the UK without having to work. You must be
able to show other sources of funding apart from your
part-time work. Source: http://www.ukcosa.org.uk/pages/advice.htm
